WHO ARE WE?

PrimaVeraRadio is owned and operated by "PVR Edizioni", a private group based in Taranto.

The station is the creation of Mino Cavallo, a 38-year-old lawyer and rock music lover.

PrimaVeraRadio is the only local station in Taranto to broadcast information programmes.

It was founded in 1981 in San Marzano di San Giuseppe, (25 kilometres East of Taranto), but its headquarters are currently located in Taranto.

The city of Taranto, home of PrimaVeraRadio, is located in the South part of Italy. It lies at the centre of the gulf of the same name, on the Ionian Sea, and has a population of approximately 250,000.

The name "PrimaVeraRadio" has a double meaning. "Primavera" is the Italian word for "spring" but it can also be translated as "The first true...".

Of course, this double meaning is deliberated.

PrimaVeraRadio is affiliated with "Popolare Network" (since 14th January 1996) and broadcasts 24 hours a day. It uses four transmitters, located in Taranto, San Marzano di San Giuseppe and Brindisi (located 60 kilometres East of Taranto, on the Adriatic Sea), with a total capacity of 5 kWs.

About 15 people work at the station, although only a handful are paid a part-time salary. Most of them, perform dual, triple or even more functions. It is not uncommon for someome to function as writer, producer and technician as needed.

The PrimaVeraRadio's annual income is derived mainly from advertising but another important source of income are donations from listeners.

PrimaVeraRadio does more than broadcasts, it promotes new Italian bands and produces concerts as well as parties.

Regular information about PrimaVeraRadio, its programmes and its activities is provided to newspapers and magazines by the Promotion Office.

Although PrimaVeraRadio currently is not listed in official ratings reports on radio stations, an official survey done in 1994 said that in an average week more than 60,000 persons in Taranto and its province tune in their radios to PrimaVeraRadio.

Future plans call for the introduction of a shortwave transmitter in which will relay the programmes of PrimaVeraRadio/Popolare Network on 11390 kHz.

If you visit Taranto and speak Italian, then give us a listen!
